Course Description

This session will introduce issues relating to developing dementia whilst working, especially people who are younger. It will include a discussion on the challenges and implications for individuals of gaining a diagnosis, negotiating accommodations, and relationships with co-workers. Additionally, it will address the challenges and implications for employers to support and accommodate individuals with dementia 


Learning outcomes:  

  • Become aware of some of the challenges of dementia in the workplace
  • Understand the definition of young onset dementia
  • Learn about potential accommodations for dementia in the workplace

Director and Associate Professor

Arlene Astell

Dr Arlene Astell is Director of the Dementia Aging and Technology Engagement lab at University Health Network, Toronto, and Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Occupational Sciences & Occupational Therapy at the University of Toronto. Arlene has been co-producing technology for people to live and age well, especially individuals living with dementia, for over 20 years. She has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications plus contributions to professional and practice journals, and is currently working on four projects relating to young onset dementia.
